Mzinga is clearly targeted at the learning space, being integrated with an LMS. Yet, for a learning group, Mzinga’s integration of formal and informal learning is also plausible. Lithium was advertising ’successful’ communities, and so I naturally inquired about their approach.

My ongoing question has been about transitioning from wrapping social networking around formal learning to being members of communities of practice. So, I could see that the completion of a course augmented with social networking activity could include an introduction to the larger practitioner community.

Temporary Learning Communities A new batch of Learning Communities emerged. But I'm also realizing that many learning communities form and go away - and that's okay. Luckily a few will also add in more community and wiki capabilities. Mzinga certainly is way better as a product that my dire prediction.

That is, the first reason to use social networking around formal learning is to make it part of the repertoire of the community. I’m still not convinced there’s an LMS that integrates social networking tools in a way that makes a smooth segue from formal to informal, though I know Mzinga’s making a stab at it.Â
