There has been a lot of talk recently of the acquisition of Saba by Cornerstone. Question: I am a current Saba Cloud customer, will I have to switch over to Cornerstone? If you are an existing customer of Saba Cloud, including folks who are using the on-premise version, you can stay on the system(s). A nswer: No.

Good ideas Saba – At the time, this was a brilliant idea. Saba always thought of themselves behind the scenes as a performance management system, even though they publicly pushed it for L&D – employees. At the time, PL was a dominant player in the industry, with lots of loyal (aka recurring revenue) customers.

I jotted down my notes, took some photos (you will see some), recorded a short video or two of presentations of interest, and asked attendees – customers of Cornerstone their thoughts of the show and what they saw. I do not see it for small businesses (999 or less) or customer education. Not an upgrade, included it.

At that time, interest in training customers, channel partners and others “outside the firewall” was on the rise, but many organizations either could not or would not use their internal employee-focused LMS to support external learning programs. Costly, labor-intensive upgrades and maintenance fees.

If you want to buy a learning system that is noted as “Enterprise” and you are providing your learning – i.e. training for your customers, you can still buy the system. I wouldn’t touch the Saba solution, which has another alphabetical salad of letters, because CBX is significantly better. But I digress.

If a vendor heavily pushes talent management, be aware that is not the same thing as skills management, and to me, makes me question what is the end game, because it hard to say TM first, and then push you are customer training B2B too. Saba Cloud – Saba is such a wild card here. Metrics needs some upgrading.

They were expensive to purchase, implement, maintain, host, upgrade and replace. Every LMS tried to be all things to all types of customers in all industries. A steady flurry of acquisitions disrupted customers’ lives but never the market as a whole. Starting around 2010, the market began changing again. Cloud to the Rescue.
