I was surprised though that mobile from an e-learning standpoint did not crush. Learning Management Systems – I expect to see more next year, but this year was solid. SumTotal is coming out with a new UI for their learning module in August. Vendors who do not see their learning platform as a LMS.

The LMS market is strong. But for all that is positive, there are negatives, and these negatives can hinder long term growth for commercial systems. Even more important, a learning management system was a new concept, so having to ask for X, when your budget has always been Y, isn’t an easy sell, especially when ROI is discussed.

The argument that you have to spend over 50K to find a sweet LMS is totally bogus. What is true is that there are plenty of awesome systems for less than 25K and even sweet systems with very nice feature sets for under 10K. I’m not talking about freebies such as Moodle or Sakai, but actually commercial systems.

They see an opportunity in the SMB space where customers may not want to purchase an ERP for HR or a full blown HRIS and then purchase or have a LMS. The downside is that some of the vendors will reduce down their L/D components and focus more on the TM side of things. Open Source Systems. Why more features on the side of HR?

Even if the product is a desktop product all you need to do is upload the course to your own web server, use the vendor’s web server or via a LMS. Yet as in the HTML5 case, online/offline synch is not able for the vast majority of learning platforms – especially in the LMS space. Let me be clear on this.
