ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Conferencing vendors – Were there any? Wi-Fi for booth vendors was horrible.

It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. Web site stinks = product stinks. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land.

to the expo vendors who forgot to bring any type of product example to the show – this event will go down in history! An additional fee of $700 per day for vendors who wanted to use Wi-Fi, which some vendors found to be spotty at best. Products that rocked. Enough of that, let’s hit the analysis.

World of Learning Conference continues to deliver winning results. Why LMS vendors and authoring tool ones for that matter, do not come in droves to this conference is mystifying to me. . In this amazing episode we find out that not all mobile devices are really mobile (according to a vendor), the new six letter word is Tin Can, mobile only products still exist, my game is your game and ASTD did not offer a breakfast for us. I see that they are showing smartphones in their booth will their product.

Kinect offers the end user the ability to become immersed in the game. In fact, there are products out there where you can use this technology on mobile devices, on cameras and even on your computer. In her case, she used the Kinect with the Xbox gaming device. Frankly it is an amazing product. Kinect in use today.

While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. A lot of talks of showing product, discussing deals, scheduling future meetings. To me that was impressive.

I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach.
