A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

eLearning 24-7

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

How to Buy a LMS

eLearning 24-7

LMS – Learning Management System – most commonly sought out by folks. LCMS – Learning Content Management System – going the way of the dodo bird. M-Learning- Mobile Learning. E-Learning – Online Learning. Many people confuse the term thinking it means electronic learning and thus will boost that they were doing e-learning 20 years ago or even longer. API – Application Program Interface.

LMS Ecosystems – The next big thing

eLearning 24-7

When you think of a learning management system you immediately focus on the features, ease of use (ideally) and more importantly how it ties directly to what you want to do in the short and long term as related to learning or learning/performance management. Perhaps you see it as an extension to an already in place, ILT (instructor led training) program. Maybe you see it as a component within a blended learning environment. E-Learning 24/7.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

For the past month, I have been conducting a survey on learning platforms and specifically learning management systems. . The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. Do you have a LMS/LCMS/Learning Platform. Today, however more and more learning management systems are bringing into content management features, inc.

Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

Ability to e-mail a group of people or an individual within the product – ideal for classroom, webinars or even admin to send specific notifications without having to sent it to everyone. E-mail notifications and reminders. Mobile Learning – yes you can view it on tablets and smartphones. Social Learning – No. Offers e-commerce module: Yes. One Step Behind

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. A LMS that came with a e-commerce, a chat room, discussion boards, front end look that did not appear to a be a LMS, library, bookstore (capability), art gallery (I used it for sponsorship purposes).

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. Templates with some learning objects? A robust learning solution of multiple capabilities and outputs? It was difficult to say the least and learning it wasn’t much easier. Break it Down – DATA (based on my directory of vendors).

E-mail specific slides to subject matter experts for review. E-Mail notifications and reminders. Terms “trainer” and “trainee” – these are instructor led terms, not e-learning. Requirement for the “trainer” to have their e-mail address before course is launched – why? Inability to have course be non-linear when live; it stays linear (another typical ILT feature), hint: WBT’s power is non-linear.

API (Application Program Interface) capability. Strong ILT functions (for those who offer instructor led training). Social Learning standard features – Lame. Social Learning add on module – Not a lot for what you get at an additional cost. It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. Why vendors still think this is not needed or used, makes no sense.

Product Review: Mindflash.com

eLearning 24-7

What I found was a solution that is a rapid e-learning authoring tool that offers easy to use functions as uploading learners and basic tracking results. The program had three areas of real concern to me, okay – really bothered me and from an e-learning perspective it is just hard to figure out why they would want to do this. You can upload the photo of the person (listed as trainer) for the course, which end users will see, their name and e-mail address.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Mindflash.com Version – Product Review

I would be afraid to enter, seeing the words, “trainer and trainees&# in the same sentence for an online learning solution. Ease of use – No tech skill required, no knowledge of online learning required (but.see further down). E-Mail template option that enables you to tweak it or leave as is and send, along with step by step options for follow up. Terminology – The use of ILT (Presentation, Slides, Trainer, Trainees).
