Remember the days when you looked forward to field trips to the planetarium, hovering over a formaldehyde preserved frog with your lab team, or seeing the movie version of Lord of the Rings on a Friday afternoon? Create “how-to” webcasts or videos, using programs like Camtasia or Jing and upload them to YouTube. Not New, But Improved.

I usually don’t get very excited about new applications, but I’m pretty pumped about Jing. Download it now if you haven’t already: both Mac and PC versions are available. Jing is a free application that masterfully lets you take screenshots and record desktop capture videos (up to 5 minutes long).

Is it for an elearning module which will be widely used over the years or an input for a training for a group of 15 professionals? If you make sure you don't need to edit, it costs a lot less time to produce a screencast. Ofcourse the choice for professional or on-the-fly will depend on the context. I will explain the latter in this blogpost.

Perhaps this is why in eLearning we have always gravitated toward using tools that publish learning in the Adobe Flash format in order to create engaging desktop experiences. I have been a Camtasia fan for a long time, as well as a SnagIt and Jing fan and I’m also very impressed with the work TechSmith is doing on Mobile.

Join her online and learn about Writing Effective eLearning Voiceover Scripts and eLearning: Writing Step-by-Step Scripts and Training Documents. He lead/led the charge into the superstore for the one-day sales event.
