My thinking about training evaluation was turned on its head by a presentation at the February 2011 MNISPI meeting by Beth McGoldrick of Ameriprise’s RiverSource University. She combined Michael Scriven’s Key Evaluation Checklist with Donald Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Learning Evaluation and Robert Brinkerhoff’s Success Case Method.

Traditionally, it has been done through classroom-based, Instructor-led training (ILT) sessions which efficiently met relevant learning objectives. ILT will work best if it is part of a blended learning program that supplements ILT with eLearning, making it a more cost-effective, and hence, justified proposition.

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. This is no longer just evaluating whether you like the course. Level 1: Reaction.

The now-common blended learning practice of assigning one or more eLearning modules prior to attending classroom training is similar to the Khan/schoolteacher model. Training uses evaluations, both formal and informal. The key to developing the best employee or the best training is to evaluate and develop them. Take the time to review your evaluation forms.
