What we expect to happen in 2008 is an explosion in the use of "self-published content"- that is solutions which enable learners to reach out and support each other.

Micro-blogging – similar to Twitter, again learners in the system can “followers&# other learners, see their micro blog posts, and their friends can respond. Complete app sharing between learners – video, audio (.mp3,mpeg),pdf, Ratings on other content in the system and comments from learners.

The premise (besides what it can do and its benefits) was that each learner has this data record and it captures everything (which it does), BUT and here is the kicker, if the learner leaves the company, school, etc., If you follow the route of deletion, then that approach of its total usefulness, from the learner angle is gone. .

Most of OutStart’s implementations are within organizations with less than 5,000 learners. Their acquisition included the Participate team – a group with 12 years of social media experience dating back to the mid 90s. 90 organizations are using OutStart with a total number of registered users at 700,000. The third track is the approach where the LMS trails another app, as in Mzinga. I think both standards and LMS's will be playing catch up with how to deal with the huge amounts of learner/content interface data that newer content will be producing. More complex content is going to be a challenge for LMS's.

I would add that Mzinga is another elearning company on this chart, in addition to Saba. Learning needs to happen beyond the institution in both time and space – we need to start thinking about using learners own on-line identities. I think that using a learner’s own social network is how social learning is taking root.
