The trick is to maintain an intrinsic motivation that is just as strong as if one were still learning informally. This is one reason, I think, why personal learning environments (which tend to heavily represent informal learning approaches and are intrinsically motivated) are assuming an ever increasing importance in education.

There has been a bit of discussion on Twitter, and at our recent ALT-C VLE symposium, on the importance of naming things. At the VLE is Dead symposium , there was an issue over the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). or the PLE and rename will be a little more difficult, I predict.

2) Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and in particular Learning Management Systems (LMSs) contribute toward restrictive practices in education and constrain both learner and teacher to operate within a model of learning that is insitutionally beneficial, but does little for the learner themselves.
