Equally of interest, are the increase in open source systems that offer for a fee, hosting on their own servers, rather than on yours. Open Source Systems. Here is my list of the top three open source systems in the education/academia market. They offer a SaaS version, but that is fee based.

Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. The version you want is the Pro version which comes with Corel Paint Shop Pro, Qarbon Viewlet builder. That said, for a freebie -and yes, I said freebie (open source) it has a lot of power.

PowerPoint – Ability to integrate or use PPT in your courses. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Many companies ban access to social media sites, especially Facebook. The Kindle Fire, Barnes and Noble’s version are still heavy e-book driven.
