In my role as blogmeister for LCB I've done a lot of reading in the communities of practice literature to gain a better understanding of how online communities work. One model I've developed is around the roles and interactions members of a community have as participants in that community. What can be done to enhance the community?

in exploring the new horizons for learning site, i came across an interesting set of articles by renate nummela caine and geoffrey caine. i particularly found it interesting that they included #3 (search for meaning in innate) and #5 (the role of emotions). their twelve principles are: All learning is physiological.

Attempts at the hierarchical organisation of information on web sites is confounded by the fact that most people now find content through searching and by following links from other content - the home page becoming less and less relevant. Intelligence is provided by real people from the bottom-up to aid social discovery.

We also have 2 people who are testing both systems; one in the student role (thanks Mom!) Part of the problem was just not having the actual site completed when I was writing the directions; we hadn’t made all the layout and design decisions when I started writing.
