Let us take a trip back to the late 90s and 2000. The idea of rapid content authoring, was non-existent. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Now, go back to the late 90s into the early 2000’s, with instructional designers developing WBT courses (Web-Based Training) and e-learning developers.

In 2000, I built my own LMS for a company, and was hired to create an e-learning program for customer training, as well as run a training division with ILT still in play (blended). The authoring tools, the popular ones, followed the similar methodology, of chapter, pages, lessons, assignments/practice, evaluation. Blackboard.

The authoring tool industry continues to evolve. I won’t regurgitate everything that appeared and did not for that matter in the authoring tool space as a whole in 2016, but a few have crossed over in a positive light, which is pushing trend. Similar to the one I had for an LMS, here is the Authoring Tool version for 2017.

The imminent release of the Adobe eLearning Suit e has got me thinking about the authoring tools market as it stands in 2009. Who needs authoring tools and which tools do they need? I can only imagine that the inclusion of Premiere would lift the price of the bundle out of reach, and certainly over $2000.

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build.
