The imminent release of the Adobe eLearning Suit e has got me thinking about the authoring tools market as it stands in 2009. Who needs authoring tools and which tools do they need? Quite a bundle and an exciting prospect for toy lovers. But I can't help but wonder who all this is aimed at.

As I write this, my Adobe Updater program is busy installing the latest updates to my Adobe Creative Suite 3. I had thought that, with my extravagant purchases, I was maintaining the Adobe share price all on my own, but the eLearning Guild's latest research report on authoring and development tools proves otherwise.

And then there's Adobe Photoshop Touch. Magazines in the newsstand are now as readable as their print equivalents and I'm not now expecting to renew any go my hard copy magazine subscriptions. In fact I will undoubtedly read more magazines than ever before, as many now include audio and video.

Back to school

I've just had to re-mortgage my home to purchase a copy of Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium (that's Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, Acrobat, Dreamweaver) and I need to justify that investment by making sure I use these tools to something like their potential. Anticipating my success, I also bought the Photoshop edition.

My top ten tools

Photoshop Lightroom: I've just got this and now use it to manage and edit my photos. It looks so cool it was definitely worth upgrading from Photoshop Elements. Adobe Illustrator: Still learning this tool, but I'm determined to make it my first choice for creating artwork. It seems absolutely fine. What else can you say?

Similarly, in my photo package, Adobe Photoshop Darkroom, I create order amongst the thousands of images by tagging the photos according to the people, places or events they represent. In iTunes, my music can be grouped by genre, by artist, by album or by star rating all at the same time.
