When I present the concept, I talk about sorting a mug full of pens and pencils. You can sort it pens, markers, pencils. Regardless, youre still working with the same set of pens, and the fat red marker has individual attributes, but some commonalities with markers, red and fat items. You can sort it red, black, blue and other.

10) Paper Call me old school, but I still like to take notes with pen and paper. Its inexpensive, easy to use, customizable, and sends email notifications when bugs come in and when they get resolved. I carry a composition book around with me most of the time to record meeting notes, brainstorm, jot down other peoples great ideas, and doodle.

Then I realized Im a constant notetaker, in the pen-and-paper sense. I used to think of live blogging as endlessly disruptive (and, if youre a non-blogger sitting next to someone relentlessly tapping away, its as bad as that nonstop ditta-ditta-bip ditta-bip-bip from someones headphones when youre on the subway).

You can sort a cup of miscellaneous pens in 10 different ways, and certain pens will group together based on certain characteristics. Each pen, while it may have commonalities with others, is still unique. Ditto with people. They share common traits in the way they learn, and learning style theories show that. #2

Marginal annotations, which abounded in the centuries when readers usually went through books with pen in hand, identify the often surprising messages that individuals have found as they read. Bindings, usually custom-made in the early centuries of printing, can tell you who owned them and what level of society they belonged to.
