PENS – Why your LMS and Authoring Tool Solution should include it

eLearning 24-7

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. Before we jump into PENS, let’s begin in the authoring tool industry.

PENS 75

What is PENS?

Growth Engineering

The answer lies in PENS. PENS stands for Package Exchange Notification Service. For it to work, both the LMS and the authoring tool need to be compatible with PENS. Without PENS, authors need a certain amount of access to the LMS to upload content, or LMS admins need a certain amount of access to the authoring tool to download it. Online Learning Glossary PENS

Why I’m a pen-and-paper girl

Good To Great

Perhaps surprisingly for someone in my kind of role, I’m a pen-and-paper girl at heart: I love my Kindle but buy my very favourite books in paperback; I take great joy in browsing the beautiful stationery in Paperchase; and, yes, 99% of the time I take notes the old-fashioned way. I also use a range of coloured pens when writing the notes up, highlighting key things (like verb endings or new sounds). Yes, I would prefer they try not to bash too loudly at the keyboard (just as I’d prefer others don’t click their pens incessantly or slurp their tea too dramatically).

However, picking up the red pen and then replacing it in the black pen socket didn't help matters. A pen placed in the black pen socket printed black no matter what colour it was.

Seven ways in which stories power learning

The nearest I’d got to so-called creative writing was penning the dialogue for interactive scenarios, so this was a brave move.
