The initial person who thought buying SumTotal was a great idea (initially it was) and then dumped it for a fortune to Skillsoft (another great idea), which in turn was someone at Skillsoft thinking this was a great idea, which turned out to be false and was a factor in Skillsoft going into bankruptcy due to the albatross known as SumTotal.

The challenge with each of these events is that there are a lot of vendors pitching their systems, content, consulting firm, e-learning tool and other items, and you as the person walking the floor doesn’t necessarily know who to look at, who to seriously consider and who to avoid. I personally think what has hurt them in the greater market is the push by so many vendors (some of which are legit competitors) to refer to them as “traditional”, citing how long they have been around. Strategic blunder of major proportions in the acquisition of SumTotal has continued to hurt them (i.e., Skillsoft).

They were expensive to purchase, implement, maintain, host, upgrade and replace. Innovation was stagnant and most vendor effort was invested in stealing customers from one another. The LMS industry in 2015 now has hundreds and hundreds of viable vendor solutions. Starting around 2010, the market began changing again.

LMS Products of the Year 2010. A lot of great products out there this year, new updates and latest versions; new companies, new services and just some real innovation. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). The product is Flash based, which is nice, but lack of mobile optimization for the iPad.

Old-school LMS companies (like SumTotal , Plateau , Learn.com , GeoLearning and Certpoint ) were acquired by much larger talent and HR-suite providers like SAP/SuccessFactors , Infor , Oracle and IBM. Costly, labor-intensive upgrades and maintenance fees. Nearly overnight, the LMS industry morphed into the talent management industry.

From a vendor perspective there was a huge impact, but what was odd, is that some vendors still are living in the past, as though, this is a minor blip, and in 2021, everything will go back as it was – corporate wise that is. Sorry to disappoint – but it won’t. . that needed a system. I wish everyone would do that.
