OpenSim and virtual worlds

Apart from my work here at Bromley Colleg with Moodle and all that that involves, some time ago, I think it must be about 7 or 8 years now, I discovered 3DML and started to do some developing with buidling 3D worlds or Spots as they were called back then. Anyway I built a Spot, and trialed it with my students with really encouraging results.

Learning in a Virtual World

Just lately a lot of my time has been taken up with Second Life, if you have yet to try virtual worlds then let me recommend the experience. My principle reason for the whole venture is to see how this new semi-immersed virtual reality can be utilised for teaching and learning, even as an extension to our continuing work with Moodle.

Is your VLE cognitive?

On another virtual learning front, I have been enjoying some success with my work in virtual worlds. My project Only Rocket Science was designed for my Level 4 and 5 students, and used the affordances of a virtual world to deliver a situated learning experience.

Decided to get Mooc'ed

Course Highlights included: - Experience Life in Second Life Avatars will Present about their Lives in Second Life Learn how to Teach in Second Life Get Acquainted with Learning Environments in SL If you were not used to virtual worlds such as Second Life then there were sessions for beginners and advanced Second Life participants alike.

Given that I do still retain a very active presence in virtual worlds and that includes Second Life and Open Simulator, it was a shame that these did not seem to be in evidence.
