At the 2011 ASTD Techknowledge Conference , Allison Rossett presented results of a study that showed that most learning professionals say that the use of e-learning is important but that very few are actually implementing it. Everyone is talking about blended learning, but that does not mean everyone is doing it.

Creating asynchronous instruction. Can do an awful lot with PPT. Most of Jane’s examples – from people with lower budgets – not the glitzy example (we need to make learning engaging, not pretty). Frustration with eLearning: Becomes dumping ground for slides, text, content All the fun stuff kept for the classroom.

All the projects provided standalone, asynchronous lessons. Asynchronous access : The information can be accessed anywhere and at any time. January 25-27: Las Vegas ( ASTD TechKnowledge 2012 ). This can ensure consistent delivery of critical information as well as compress the time to learn. Doesn’t interfere with production : the learner is not constrained by real work processes. I think that this hits the point that for many people on the receiving end, elearning is synonymous with asynchronous courses. The courses themselves are primarily asynchronous, with the occasional synchronous chat. A lot of my focus for design is on the interactions between students and the facilitator and among the students themselves. That part of the design doesnt exist for the self-paced e-learning courses; there isnt that same kind of learning community.
