Step 6: Add music. Animated explainer videos almost always have music. It’s also easy to add and edit a music track in Camtasia.

I’ve mentioned Audacity before. Sometimes we need background music or sound effects. If you have some money you can always buy background music and sound effects on CD. When I did video production, we had a CD binder that held about 200 disks full of just about any music style you would need. Free Music Archive.

It’s pretty helpful when I’m trying to improve my musical skills, too. The Harvard Business Review group discussions alone could probably occupy all of my time. YouTube is also the wonderful conduit for sharing expertise in other ways, whether it’s through TED Talks or hundreds of other video resources.

The background audio music was a great touch and added polish to the screencast. The video was recorded with Camtasia Studio 5 and audio recorded using his sE2200a mic in Audacity. And, this series formed the basis of a 40 minute podcast interview in Joel Spolsky's Business of Software forums. Check it out.
