Now this is not the case for the vast majority of vendors, but you would be surprised at the number who do this and say nothing. Hocus Pocus Demos. I am a huge fan of demos – whether they be face to face or via the internet. What I am not a fan of, are the demos who are shown in a vanilla style.

If you are looking for a soft skills learning game this is it. This year there are more e-learning vendors than in the past. Sure many of the learning platforms and LMSs mentioned their mobile capabilities, but if you looked around their marketing placards and immediate copy it wasn’t highly visible.

Vendors who offer it will see only a plus – assuming the rest of their system is favorable. . Vanilla demos – Still hot and I ask you why? Before I see my scheduled demo – ask to see a demo that shows off the capabilities of the vendor’s system – after all, you are not going to buy a vanilla demo.

Best booth – Gamelearn, very modern and hip – but no demos; so Mindmarker wins out – nice hip booth and mobile devices with their product on it to play around on. SumTotal is coming out with a new UI for their learning module in August. I can tell you it is way better than their current learning UI.

4 Demo Dupe. The demo switcheroo is a big time gripe. You see an amazing demo with all the bells and whistles. It doesn’t come with everything you saw in the demo. It requires the LMS vendor to fix what is not working. E-Learning 24/7. It follows a similar style. You buy the LMS. You are mad.

Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language. A high percentile pitched “demo&# as a trial, but you had to register – so hello phone call and at least an e-mail (even if you ask not to e-mail). Demo vs Trial.

The buzz, hype, demos, salespeople, awful expensive food, hotels that overcharge (I always find better deals on Expedia or sign up for the hotel’s e-mail newsletter) and yes, sometimes beyond awful seminars. The worst thing a vendor can do is not even have a freebie or some candy. Another vendor had created a working demo.

How is that different than a demo? Why do some vendors have trials and others do not? A trial is the ability to view the product or tool for x number of days – although some vendors will extend pass the “deadline” if you need them to. My take – no vendor should ask for your credit card during a trial.

Heck, I do them all the time and two things are for certain: the person doing the demo either asked what I was interested in seeing prior to the call or they didn’t. A third usual zinger is the demo script. Do one and get it right. . Do two or more.

You did not do your due diligence about the vendor, but rather just looked at their web site. You most likely did not see a demo. That if you spoke with the vendor, it was a quick phone call and cursory information was provided on both ends – you and the vendor. A demo will be your lifesaver in all this.

I often hear people say they want mobile learning in their solution, social learning, e-commerce, but when you ask for specifics they sometimes have a blank stare on their face. Specifics. This lack of WOW equally hurts in the demo. I don’t care how awesome your system is, if you show a vanilla demo and tell folks well it can look like this or that, folks just won’t see it as that. Again, it is not because they cannot grasp it, rather the brain cannot. .

As a vendor, you had better believe that you are all of these things. This is going to come from demos and testing, not from an RFP response. Take the time to do some proofreading before sending it to e-learning vendors. You will need to formulate your own opinions about "easy to use" and "intuitive."

Everything is turned on in your demo, but the vendor fails to mention during its presentation that some of that functionality is not included in the product you are looking at. E-Learning vendors offer training or tell you they have robust training, you find out it is PDF guides with an accompanying video.

In the demo at their booth, they readily showed numerous avatars, and it would have been very cool to see the true synch experience – something that Storyline cannot do. Sadly, for whatever reason, the feature was not in the demo. Avatars sound very cool and they are being used.

Of course you had to sit down and go through the presentation/demo of Presenter – but still – nice one. However there were plenty of vendors who had — NOTHING. What I saw was a LMS with a 3D like user interface and offered social – and yes, analytics. Maybe, it was just me. Best giveaway – You won Adobe!
