Last week, I attended DevLearn. Simply put, one vendor has over 200 Flash-based templates in their product. Not only was it quite present at DevLearn, but in general, this is one of the new “hot” items in the space. Microsoft has announced that their next browser version will support only HTML5 and not Flash. I know people are going to tell me that you can view Flash on alternative browsers with the iPad.

Some big pluses with HTML5 over Flash for example are: Can manipulate the code – it is open, flash is proprietary. That said, if your system does not enable HTML5, the browser will switch to Flash. To hear about my forecasts for 2014, you will need to attend DevLearn and my wonderful presentation – which will include the top 10 authoring tools for 2013. I loved Lucky Charms cereal. Not the cereal per se, but the marshmallows.

Here at DevLearn 2011 in Las Vegas I've got authoring tools on my mind. It exports to HTML 5 as well as Flash, although I'm not sure they've perfected this yet. This is a big deal, because iPads and iPhones don't support Flash. It is about time to move on from Flash anyway, because you hardly see it on everyday websites anymore. Anyone who wanted to do top-end development had to do serious coding in Flash.

Going into DevLearn I was a little unsure of what to expect considering it was my first conference like this. One of the presenters is going as far as emailing us flash files she used in a course so that we can re use them. I was hoping to get lucky and find some miracle idea or resource that will make it easy for me to implement eLearning at a minimal cost.

Phil demonstrated how to take a piece of learning developed in Flash (CS5.5) His solution is to “take Flash out of the browser “, i.e. eliminate the need to have Flash installed in order to use the learning asset.It all got a bit technical for me, but in essence Phil showed how we (well our Flash team) can use the “Device Central” feature to publish to Adobe Air for Playbook, for Android, and for iOS, in each case creating a native App not a Flash file.
