I would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses. Mobile Learning. ILT heading into the online path in one way or another.

I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement. I see way too many vendors think a web site is all they need and people will find them.

I saw a lot more folks than in previous shows and more e-learning vendors too. Equally there were several ILT vendors who had some type of online learning thing going on. Still there are plenty of hold outs on the ILT side, especially those creating “leaders” or developing coaches.

The whole premise behind web based training is that the end user learns on their own, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere they want. ILT does not offer self-pace nor self-control. Graph reporting. I was surprised at the number of vendors offering a blended product – with ILT as more of the focus then their WBT counterpart. Requirement for the “trainer” to have their e-mail address before course is launched – why? Inability to have course be non-linear when live; it stays linear (another typical ILT feature), hint: WBT’s power is non-linear. Again, it screams instructor led. Active – courses that are live.

Do you want to offer people to register for ILT or webinars on their own? What about e-mail notifications? Can you track to see who opened the e-mail notifications and who did not? As you can see, just saying one item and assuming the vendor knows what you want is not enough. For example: you want a calendar.
