30% vendors offer at least one type of social media – from my latest LMS directory. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V).

If they are taking college type courses online for free, they are likely to be visiting a MOOC. If they want to take courses on how to learn software or business or whatever, they may be watching videos on YouTube – for free or paying a fee to use such sites as Lynda.com. you do it there – and one click install.

The fact of the matter is that e-learning was devised as online learning and not electronic learning – which aligns more to CBT (computer based training), network to network training via your own internal network before online was available to all, and so forth. If I have those skill sets, why would I want to be an administrator of a LMS, when I could work free-lance or in some other programming capacity? Open Source Systems – That have to be 100% free to be considered. Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. That said, across the board for all Big Dog systems, their social learning functionality was weak. Oh, yeah 100% free.

Solve it: When the vendor is showing you the LMS/LCMS ask them if that is included in the system or an extra cost. From the price perspective – another reason to go the authoring in the LMS route, according to the vendor – there are plenty of open source solutions you can get that are free or less than $100.

I see it a lot, especially with social learning and the wonderment of some vendors of adding a “discussion forum and text chat room&# as part of their solution. For some vendors the words are just words, not actually making it happen, and when they do, many charge for the privilege of you contacting them.

Personally, dump this feature and offer some social media components right there on the screen. Again, with over 2,400 social media sites you can go beyond. Because I was using the free version, I was unable to use this feature and thus cannot tell you what it looked like and how it played on a mobile device. Bottom Line.
