How We Use Social Media for Informal Learning

Bottom-Line Performance

Vendors talk about social learning like its something revolutionary, but I’m here to tell you its not. Informal learning is an everyday thing. Social media tools are just another platform we use to learn from each-other and find information serendipitously. They either can’t see the value or simply don’t want to have to learn a new “thing.” Other times, they neglect to post mission critical information in the new location.

What is informal learning, anyway?

The Learning Circuits

First, more importantly, if anyone has a comment on research regarding the effectiveness of informal learning, please attach it to Peter Isackson's comment below. For me, the question is still, what is informal learning? A lot of history analogies are brought in (we all get to learn about Dutch shipping patterns or the advent of the abacus), as well as out-of context quotes. So, with that "dead elephant" out of the way, what is informal learning, anyway?

Micro-Learning as a Workplace Learning Strategy

Learnnovators

In todays’ time-crunched, attention-deficit and multitasking world, micro-learning seems to have cropped up as a possible solution to corporate learning and personal development. However, what exactly is micro-learning remains a bit of an elusive concept with different people defining it in different ways. Can a 10-minute learning byte be defined as micro-learning? Would a commoncraft-style video be considered micro-learning?

Which is a preface to talk about learning standards, and the field is quite dynamic right now. Learning Standards. And then the IMS (an initiative of Educause before being spun out as an independent effort) started creating standards, as did the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the major body in the US responsible for computing standards. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough.

Quip: conversations

Clark Quinn

We may execute individually, but the innovations, the changes, the needed learning happens by dialog. IM chats provide an open channel to have a continuing presence. One of the coming roles for learning designers is facilitating the informal learning as well as the formal, I suggest. Conversations are the engine of business. Seriously.

What is a Learning Management System? (2019 Update)

Docebo

Today’s enterprise learning strategies require smart solutions that go beyond the capabilities of traditional tools. A Learning Platform empowers L&D departments to drive business growth through their efforts, and a key pillar of this solution is the Learning Management System (LMS). To understand how a Learning Platform will help improve enterprise learning objectives, you must first grasp what an LMS is, why it’s an essential tool, and how to get the most out of it.
