As an independent consultant, I have worked from home full time since 2011. It’s rare to find salaried positions that are 100% remote, although more companies will allow it now. eLearning companies. Smaller companies may only hire freelancers and subcontractors, but even mid-size companies have full-time roles.

In August 2011, I wrapped up my last project at Cisco and formed my LLC. Usually I get paid after sending reminders, but one company still owes me over $5K for work completed before I quit. As of this month, it’s been 10 years since I left my last full-time job and started my own business. The Downs of Consulting. Nonpayment.

Larger companies are also more likely to have a budget to do more extensive elearning. Those contracts are often W-2 contracts through a recruiting and placement company. I have been working as an independent consultant since 2011. Many of the full-time positions are in larger organizations.

In fact, one company analyzed thousands of job postings and resumes. There are reasons to be skeptical of their exact numbers (it’s a single company’s database, they don’t share their algorithms, and there’s some weirdness in the data), but the general point seems solid.
