Well not quite, but it is pretty dang close to the definition of Management Consulting in Wikipedia: Management consulting refers to both the industry of, and the practice of, helping organizations improve their performance, primarily through the analysis of existing business problems and development of plans for improvement. Organizational Effectiveness as Internal Management Consulting
Another possible organizational model is the professional services firm or management consulting company. It would be possible to organize the unit as an internal consultancy of sorts modeled on the multidisciplinary focus of many of the large consulting companies. In the same way we now do needs assessment to identify formal skill development needs, learning consultants can analyze business processes, problem solving, and decision making methods to determine how and where informal learning solutions and mechanisms would help improve performance. Learning consultants can help teams plan, establish, build nurture and maintain communities of practice.
Interest in informal learning by the training function is tangible and growing. The 2008 ASTD State of the Industry report contained a special survey section on informal learning.
