I have mixed feelings about templates. On one hand templates are great because they help guide the production process and maintain consistency. On the other hand, it’s easy to become too reliant on templates. Often this forces us to use templates that don’t fit the context of the course content. They have thousands.

A common frustration for many rapid elearning developers is wanting to build elearning courses that look good but not having the graphic design expertise or resources to make it happen. Many aren’t intentional when it comes to the visual design of their elearning courses. They usually start with a nice looking template and then as they build the course they’ll add images that represent the content on the screen. For example, in our workshops we use this demo of the Hoh Rain Forest. Louis (ASTD).

With the ease of authoring, it’s placed the burden to do all of it on the shoulders of the rapid elearning developer. Rapid elearning design is made up of three core functions: rapid authoring, rapid assets, and rapid instructional design. And this is a big challenge for many elearning developers. Many people don’t have the skills to develop the screen elements, and they also don’t have the budget to acquire the assets they need.

For new elearning developers, I recommend a similar process. Find elearning courses you like and then break them down into chunks so it’s easier to understand how the courses were created. Course Chunk Templates. If you’re just getting started, create a PowerPoint template with a slide for each area.
