LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. This is to say that 90% of features most folks seek are nearly universal in a LMS – low cost or otherwise. Parental portal, student portal, teacher portal (education systems).

Extended Enterprise – aka Multi-Tenet, Portals-Sub Portals. If you want an EE, you will want e-commerce. Especially if it costs extra. I only know of a few vendors that include a TM/PM feature at no additional cost, it just comes with the system – and their systems are what I consider a full LMS.

I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. Cost/Budget Allocation. Social Learning Management System of the Year.

I am projecting that by the end of 2012, you will see HRIS features come into play, but more so as an additional cost module. I still believe this will be a winner in 2012, and that more vendors will jump into this space. GeoLearning’s Maestro product is now called SumTotal Maestro. Why more features on the side of HR?

In fact there are systems that cost less than 25K that are excellent. Q: Saba, SumTotal, Cornerstone, Taleo, SuccessFactors must be the best because a lot of people buy these systems. Learning is really becoming secondary, even if these vendors offer a LMS. . File repository – gaining steam. Price Point Systems.
