Although I am employed to teach, I consider it something of a disappointment if I don't learn something myself during my teaching sessions. Some might complain that 'only the expert has a right to teach', or that 'students should not be allowed to go off and find out for themselves', but sadly, this is really missing the point.

I had the honour to be presented with an award for ''most innovative use of teaching methods'' at the recent Plymouth University student union SSTAR Awards. On the one hand, now I'm no longer teaching in higher education, I feel as though I'm missing out on something that has been a part of my life for the past two decades. Lecturing at a university can appear glamorous. But behind the scenes, there are a thousand and one other jobs lecturers must do just to keep their heads above water.

Flipping the teacher

The work of Harvard University professor Eric Mazur supports this approach, because, as he says - instruction is easier than assimilation, and advocated coaching rather than lecturing as early as the 1990s. We learn by teaching. Ask students to peer-teach. The age old seminar is a great flipping method. Unported License.

Generation next

They will have no memories of the 20th century, which just happens to be the same century their lecturers were born and educated within. Lecturers tend to teach in the same way they themselves were taught. It's sometimes hard to see how listening in lectures, attending seminars, and sitting exams promotes these skills.

Nor have I been happy simply 'towing the line' where important things like teaching and learning are concerned. I always have an idea of what I'm going to cover in my lectures and seminars, but I rarely write anything down, preferring to keep several ideas in my head so that I can respond quickly and flexibly if the situation demands it.

Opening Pandora's box

It started off in sedate style a few years ago, when several students began to ask if they could audio record my lectures and seminars to play back later. Next came the introduction of the lecture capture tools, video and audio as well as the ability to synchronise these in sequence with slides. Others are ambivalent.
