It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land. E-Learning 24/7.

In order for social learning to exist you need to have the following: social media plus e-learning. And, let us clear up another point: social learning is not just social networking. I hate when people see it as only Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. not working for a vendor). Do you have a Facebook account?

Oh, excuse me – social networking to most of the vendors who spin it under the guise of social learning. I won’t constantly bore you on their Facebook, Twitter like components, nor discussion board or text chat, but seriously.who thinks this is engaging and interactive? E-Learning 24/7. Yes, I own one.

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. Facilitation now exists between the pieces of software, similar to interaction between a human and a computer (again, in a basic example). Facebook like features?

There are enough vendors who are not going into the widget space, but are enabling the integration possibilities of APIs, which are really offers a powerhouse potential (a future emerging technology topic). Forecast: More vendors offering the integration capability of APIs. Google maps is an example of an APIs.

Is it me or does it seem that most vendors in the LMS/LCMS market still believe that with some smoke and mirrors, you won’t realize that social media actually must be integrated into social learning for it to exist? Or do they just drop the word, “social media&# , and rather say, “social learning and web 2.0″?

Built in video chat and notifications that can be sent not only by SMS but also through Facebook just add real value. Its a hybrid of a learning platform, learning exchange and social collaboration.
