Forums vs. Social Networks?

Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. It aims at a very broad audience that includes everyone from early adopters to technology laggards. Participation will eventually mean a lot of different things, but initially it will primarily be sharing ideas. user can do this through posting to a threaded discussion quite easily. They could also do it as comments on a blog. Typically they center around threaded discussions. Generally are easy to get into.

Give employees “a place” to gather. (ex: Hosted third party sites like LinkedIn and Ning ; Partially self-hosted sites like KickApps and Yammer or even SharePoint). So this made me think of organizations. Of the companies I’ve worked for or currently consult with, very few have a robust Knowledge Management System (KMS) where those with the knowledge can easily share that knowledge with others. In fact, most of the knowledge sharing that takes place in one of two ways: 1. training department produces training. 2. Someone sticks their head over their cube and asks their neighbor.

Last week I presented a session at ASTD TechKnowledge entitled eLearning 2.0 - Applications and Implications. It could just as easily have been called Web 2.0 Applications in Learning. It was designed to be a small to medium size group discussion, but because the room was large it was very challenging to do that successfully. discussed a bit of these issues in First Thoughts After ASTD Sessions. I'm writing this post for both attendees of the session to have some notes and for people who were not at the session to hopefully get value from the discussion that happened there. Keeping Up - April's Big Question

April's Big Question from Learning Circuits is "How to Keep up?" This is in reference the immense and rapidly expanding technology tools. It is tough to stay on top of all the emerging tools. However, being involved in an e-learning community is a big help. For me it is a blog community and following many experts on Twitter. Not only am I often made aware of new tools, but also get opinions, tips, and examples of their use. You can never keep up with it all, but access to many experts who are also finding and sharing the lastest tech tools make it much less daunting.
