SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. The idea was that you have content in SCORM and add it to your learning system that accepts SCORM, and tada, it works without any problems or issues. In the late 80s, AICC, the predecessor to SCORM, was born.

Or are you just confused by all the abbreviations like: SCORM, AICC, XAPI, and CMI5? and SCORM 2004. and SCORM 2004. The latest version is SCORM 2004 but both are still in use. The main difference between the two is that SCORM 2004 adds options for complex navigation and sequencing. SCORM and SCORM compliant.

As Stephen Johnson tells us, in his book Where Good Ideas Come From , the openness of standards fosters innovation. . After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves.

SCORM 2004, xAPI, AICC, etc. Hopefully it gets the basic idea across. Conventional style guides often omit information that’s important for eLearning. It’s a good idea to have a style guide specifically designed with eLearning in mind. Tracking standards – SCORM 1.2, Closed caption text requirements.
