I bring this up, because after it was announced that Cornerstone will be acquiring SumTotal, the pundits went out and espoused some very interesting ideas. I never put innovation and SumTotal in the same sentence. SumTotal was never innovative. They were not the first ones with a mobile app. That is their core audience.

To the 2018-19 Learning System Grid,identifying the Leaders, Risers, Steady and Slow vendors for NexGen functionality. . For this year’s grid, an additional vendor was added per group (last year it was five per grid). NexGen Functionality Tier 2 (Not every vendor has all of these items, just an fyi).

Of course, Tena Lyons, vice president for product marketing at SumTotal, works for a learning technology company, so she’d obviously have some pros to offer. How important is it for vendors to listen to customers? As a vendor, we can’t afford to guess what our customers need. Technology eases this burden for learning leaders.

Once a darling of vendors who used it to show their demos, now? In fact, in 2019, I did not see one demo from a vendor on Adobe Connect. Personally a vendor can call their system whatever they want, but there are a few factoids to remember about micro-learning. Cumbersome? Not so much. You tell me, is that a good thing?

There are some learning system vendors though, who are xAPI only and offer nothing else. Going ‘all in’ on xAPI does run the risk of problems or delays in working with systems that are further out on the adoption curve. We also see adoption of xAPI being driven by the pressure to prove the business impact of learning.

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. Expect a few commercial vendors to jump into the augmented reality space for e-learning.
