I personally think what has hurt them in the greater market is the push by so many vendors (some of which are legit competitors) to refer to them as “traditional”, citing how long they have been around. Learn.com – First a content aggregator, then jumped into the LMS market, acquired by Taleo, who promised to invest heavily.

Innovation was stagnant and most vendor effort was invested in stealing customers from one another. Oracle acquired Taleo who had acquired Learn.com and the list goes on. Over the last five years, new LMS companies have poured into the marketplace filling an obvious need of customer service and targeted business solutions.

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Perpetuating the Myth.

And yeah there are vendors who will taut that they are in X list or Y rankings and thus should be included. This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). Not everyone gets in. But I digress.

Old-school LMS companies (like SumTotal , Plateau , Learn.com , GeoLearning and Certpoint ) were acquired by much larger talent and HR-suite providers like SAP/SuccessFactors , Infor , Oracle and IBM. With that kind of captive customer, why would a talent management LMS vendor even bother to improve its product? And that’s when it hit.
