ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Conferencing vendors – Were there any? Wi-Fi for booth vendors was horrible.

M-Learning with a native app – slowly trucking along, but I am hearing quite a few vendors who are either in development or getting going in 2014. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. I mean if you say you need “e-commerce for 500 users, certificates, ability to add users to groups for courses”, that would cover about 550 systems. Write vendors’ names on pencils and throw them at the ceiling.

Basically it means that regardless of the mobile device, the screen will automatically change to reflect that device. . As a result, vendors who were anti- on/off synch are now working on it to become a reality. or earlier.

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. That is expected to change.

In 2010, the RCAT market continued its upswing and nothing indicates to me it will be changing anytime soon. Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature. Some acquisitions, some goodbyes, but overall very strong.

Sub-portal/child – should be a sub set of the main LMS, it is branded/skinned differently then the main system, so LMS vendors allow the header and footer to be changed in the sub-portal/child, but the parent’s main logo still appears. One of the ways vendors pull this off is by listing e-commerce as a feature.

It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. Secondly, a typically very common is the integration to the back end of the LMS – reports, tracking, etc. Why vendors still think this is not needed or used, makes no sense.

I am seeing an increase in the ability to send these files to fellow students (virtually non-existent in corporate systems) and the ability to track in the back end – how many times the file has been viewed and downloaded.
