It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. An API can tie back into the administration side of things, still providing you with the data needed, so if you want to go with an open source API it can be done. Social Learning.

In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities.

Because it offers the capability to start out using it either as the robust social learning product and ignore the LMS part (inc. But the real WOWSA is in the social learning component. One of the biggest problems I always saw in the products was the back end, i.e. what the administrator sees and has to use. I hate it.

What’s the best way to add components to your product? In the past it was build it yourself (pricey) or find open source and customize it (could be pricey, but cheaper then complete build). The partner approach works this way: vendor A integrates Vendor B’s solution into their product.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power.

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. I hope it does – especially with SaaS products. It happened with a vendor that I was quite impressed with several months back. I’ve equally been zapped by products outside our space too. Everything is turned on in your demo, but the vendor fails to mention during its presentation that some of that functionality is not included in the product you are looking at.
