First some findings from the eLearningGuild's recent research report on Synchronous Learning Systems : Guild members are resoundingly positive in giving synchronous learning very high marks for its impact on their organizations. And I used to with Elluminate, but have not had much issue recently. A few thoughts.

When I liveblogged the TCC 2008 conference , I always had the Elluminate presentation up on my primary screen (my desktop computer) and my blog on my laptop. Synergy lets me easily switch focus back to the Elluminate screen to join the backchannel chat or answer a poll; you just move your mouse over to the other screen and type away.

Tried to show video of Meet Charlotte, but video doesn’t work well over Elluminate. This is not a synchronous platform–experts can use a webcam and easily record and upload content. Not a lot of instructional design, just getting people to share content. More like an intranet YouTube.

Dimdim delivers synchronized live presentations, whiteboards and web pages while sharing your voice and video over the Internet - with no download. I have used www.dimdim.com before and Elluminate (but this is not open source.) Elluminate is a really nice tool but not open source. Big Blue Button is my favorite at the moment!

To me Real Time Collaboration (RTC) solutions like Macromedia Breeze , Centra , WebEx , Elluminate etc replicate oh so many of the problems we face in the traditional face-to-face model.
