We are moving, albeit in fits and starts, from traditional learning environments, where curriculum are essentially assigned to learners, to more collaborative and innovative environments where learners can self-direct their learning and participate in communities of passion. It was for their own good after all. Yeah, right.

The power of tools like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Yammer, are pretty astounding. They’re sources of novelty and innovation (because they know quite different things than we do) and bridges to other social networks (because they know quite different people than we do). The clustering of employee groups was not the surprising thing.

Medical students and residents regularly learn new skills by first observing a procedure, then practicing the procedure under supervision, and finally teaching, or modeling, the procedure for another. Shoving the med student into a room with a patient and basket of supplies and leaving them to learn by trial and error sounds much worse to me.
