Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. A LMS should first be a LMS. I have some real concerns on what is taking place with Saba today.

While I disagree with the L&D-only focus (ignoring training – as though L&D is the only entity around), I found that the latest version of Cornerstone CSX (Learn – LMS), is going in the right direction. In the newest version (target launch is Nov/Dec 2022), an “intelligent board” makes its debut.

Saba Cloud (Legacy is finished – at least in my opinion – and the cloud is the way to go, but is it for Saba customers?). Instructure like so many other HE systems can’t help themselves. SuccessFactors let me know that they are committed to the learning side (LMS) and will be putting money towards it.

I must confess it is now four months since I received an in-depth demonstration from the people at Saba of their People Systems Suites. First off, it’s worth noting that Saba does not seem to have been suffering like so many of its competitors through the downturn: It gained 113 new customers in 2010, which was a record year.

Sure in some cases it did poorly, but it wasn’t because the idea wasn’t sound, it was due to the way the learning was presented. The LMS market takes a beating all the time. An analyst jumps on board and now the doom of the LMS is here. The L&D ripple effect with the LMS, a combo delight for some, showed up too.

Often, these posts have 287 or more responses from LMS vendors, each claiming they offer the best solution, given the overwhelming evidence provided in the original 2-sentence help request. So for LMS and learning platforms, I compared based on the template (which is quite extensive) and the same for those in the LEP/LXP space (Sorry, I still think they should be LEP, so going back to LEP/LXP). . Q: I’m looking for a LMS that has classroom mgt, can have abc learners see only one course or a set of courses, while another group sees a different set of courses and I need to batch upload my learners. Cornerstone CBX $$$ – Okay, on their web site it is listed as Cornerstone LMS. The salespeople call it CBX, and seem to get perturbed when you refer to it as Cornerstone LMS. I wouldn’t touch the Saba solution, which has another alphabetical salad of letters, because CBX is significantly better. The Vendors.

While I track now 1,300 learning systems around the world, the rankings are based on 1,000. I removed any vendor built 100% on free open source or open source whereas it is always 100% customized so that one could build a mega monster or build a 1995 version. Equally, I removed systems for K-6, K-12, higher education.

In all the years I have attended and have known about ATD (formally ASTD), this year is by far the most in terms of e-learning vendors, especially those in the LMS space. Growth Engineering LMS – #1 in my Top 50 and their launch of Genie, their authoring tool which comes with the system, but can also be a stand alone.

Anyway, if you were talking a LMS vendor as I would define them, there were a lot, but there was not 100 of them, let alone 45. .
