LMS vendors: R u hearing us?

eLearning 24-7

LMS Vendors. 30% vendors offer at least one type of social media – from my latest LMS directory. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

Latest Trends in E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

We call online learning, e-learning, not e-training, but some vendors will have you believe that “training” is the appropriate term, rather than learning. Custom Development and LMS vendors. LMS vendors – read below. LMS vendors build in-house or outsource. Back in the early years you were more likely to see vendors build their own courses, with a nice size staff and someone who had an instructional design background leading the charge.

How to Buy a LMS

eLearning 24-7

It does not mean that the system comes with a native app nor offers online/offline synchronization. Some vendors (and it is gaining steam) offer “active users” Active users – People who are taking at least one course during the month. There are a few vendors who will charge only when the end user completes a course (but this is rare). E-Commerce model – It is rare, but there are vendors who offer it.

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Sure there were exceptions on the desktop side – most notably Articulate Storyline, but overall until desktop vendors see the advantages of SaaS, especially with real time collaboration and peer review, tablets will be slow going. Online/Offline Synch. Increase in number of vendors. I love the end of the year.

Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. Rankings are based on my directories which are updated monthly; I also keep a separate directory which will contain more vendors than listed within the visible directories – reason being it offers clients (those who hire me – buyers to have an added bonus, of course it contains much more info); that said the monthly directories provide key info and in future updates have new columns added.

This is not (fill in the blank)

eLearning 24-7

The people who suffer the most from this contradiction are the consumers and a vast majority of vendors. If you listen to content authoring tool vendors who have added the capability of HTML5 it is easy to misunderstand what some are saying is not what you assume to be true. A native app that enables you view the courses on your mobile device with online/offline synch. Online/Offline synch. Provides the ability for online/offline synch – which is huge.

How a vendor of this size and quality can have this business approach in this day and age is beyond me. I’d also want to see online/offline synchronization which currently does not exist. . #4

Online/offline synchronization for mobile learning with tablets – The number one request I receive from my consumer clients is whether they system has a m-learning app that works with tablets and online/offline synchronization. While many vendors pitch mobile learning they seem to be stuck on the idea that people are not interested in online/offline synchronization.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. Expect a few commercial vendors to jump into the augmented reality space for e-learning. These vendors, I believe will consist of: Vendors who offer an authoring tool or game sim and will develop additional product lines tied to Augmented Reality.

Review of ASTD International Trade Expo

eLearning 24-7

Lots of vendors, lots of potential. There were vendors that had nice LMSs and cool features. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. I would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses. Many vendors stated as such to me.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed). rather then going through the LMS vendor.

Dispelling the LMS Myth

eLearning 24-7

Customized skinning – albeit in today’s market there are some vendors who charge for skins – disgusting! Excluding the above, there are vendors out there who charge extra for. When a vendor offers the ability to add APIs, offer personalization, increases multilingual capabilities and provides. One vendor already offers it in 2012, and knowing this industry – if something takes off and works, others will follow. Right now, you have to upload the course as you would with your SCORM wrapper, where you self-upload or use the course within an online mobile platform from your authoring tool vendor. Enables people to work offline without net connection then when back online, re-synchs with SaaS platform or system.

ASTD International Conference Day 1 Wrap-Up

eLearning 24-7

It was an exciting first day, with lots of vendors hitting the entire training spectrum. Comes with online/offline synch. Here are my favorites: Numerous vendors were unhappy that they had to pay $700 a day for Wi-Fi, that didn’t work most of the time or was slow. One vendor who spent $5,000 on their booth, thought the $700 a day fee was obscene and declined. Other vendors weren’t so lucky. As usual, some vendors showed up with no demos of any kind.

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Mobile learning – it might surprise you to know that 75-80% of all systems in the space, currently do not offer any type of mobile learning, the number goes up even higher for online/offline synch. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors).

Video, Mobile: E-Learning consumers respond

eLearning 24-7

484 respondents who completed every question, 40% corporate, 30% education, 8% non-profit, o% from association and 22% e-learning vendors (those were extracted from the below results and will be seen in a future blog). The survey was 100% independent – it was not tied to any LMS vendor or have any ultra hidden agenda meaning (sorry conspiracy ppl). Consumers are consumers – something that many LMS vendors tend to forget. I don’t what it is about surveys.

Five LMS Sins

eLearning 24-7

As a vendor though, whether you are based in the states or going into the states (from another country), the price wars await you. Next thing you know, the other vendor retorts, “I can beat that” and just like that, as a vendor you are in a war. . First off not every LMS vendor does what I’m about to tell you, but oh boy, plenty do – and it is not just the big players, it could be mid-size, heck even small size vendors. .

Being Thankful: E-Learning Thoughts

eLearning 24-7

Vendors who added innovative features including text to speech (way to go SoftChalk), to true HTML5 support (Claro, Cm-Studio, Rapid Intake, Toolbook and sort of HTML5 output – Lectora) to image editors, SDK kits, gaming sims and Sony PSP devices. Vendors who added robust feature sets in their LMSs – including ebook publishing, social media functionality beyond the same ol same, online/offline synch, podcasting, 3D worlds. Thank you to Vendors offering Discounts.

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

eLearning 24-7

billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. I surmise that many of you do this, at least with photographs, whether it be offline (downloaded software) or online.

LMS Ecosystems – The next big thing

eLearning 24-7

If you are taking a deep look around the LMS market you may be hearing a new buzz word, “ecosystem” Some LMS vendors have used the term in the past because they themselves saw their platform as a one stop shop. They probably offered you the ability to buy courses through them eliminating the need to go directly to the 3rd party vendor. M-Learning – native app, online/offline synchronization – supports HTML5.

Latest E-Learning Insight and News

eLearning 24-7

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Despite the overwhelmingly number of vendors who have a “desktop only&# solution, based on what I am seeing- a result of new feature sets – this will change. A couple of vendors offer SDK development tools with their SaaS authoring tool.

New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

eLearning 24-7

A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. I’m always amazed at some of the names vendors come up with for authoring tools. Well besides my rankings of course, think about this: 1st vendor to offer collaboration and peer review. 1st vendor to have online/offline mobile synch. 1st vendor IMO to truly have HTML5 output. Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July.

Best of the Best – Extended Enterprise or multi-tenant LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Just because a system lists itself as an extended enterprise does not mean it comes with multiple domains (which with some vendors includes customized) nor with multiple portals or my preferable term – “multi-tenant” You may see an “extended enterprise” which not only refers to the company’s employees, but also their customers and channel partners. Native app available in iTunes/Apple and Google (Android) – very few vendors have native apps.

Course Authoring Tools for eLearning Developers and the masses

eLearning 24-7

Rapid Intake m-Learning Studio - Strong solution for the masses and developers, forward thinking approach, they also offer an online/offline product called m-Learning synch which includes a mobile learning online platform, rather than connecting to your LMS. The authoring tool vendors will say their products are for everyone. Or the demand from themselves, the vendors. Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers.

LMS Committees – Good idea? Or painful experience?

eLearning 24-7

The reality is that some LMSs suffer down time – even though the vendor says it won’t. Bugs do arise and more often than not, the vendor will kick it up a notch to resolve it. I can’t tell you the number of times the issue was on the client’s side and not the LMS’s side, but the vendor is often blamed. Also, when a vendor does an update they tend to do it – after hours – as in past 12 a.m. .

M-Learning: Where’s the app for that?

eLearning 24-7

With all these vendors talking about their solution and its capabilities on mobile devices, it should be easy to find an app for that. Regardless if the vendor is m-learning specific, content authoring tool, LMS, web conferencing or a hybrid. Nowadays more and more vendors (thankfully) are seeing the benefit of mobile devices. There is actually a vendor who has a mobile app available on iTunes, Upside Learning. iPad/iPad 2 Vendors.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. Works even when offline. Offers offline reading.

I loved the lip synch of that tune.

What should be the inevitable qualities of an elearning authoring tool?

Creativ Technologies

The target audience might want a course to be available offline, so the authoring tool must support it through SCORM, which means that the content is accessible on even an offline LMS. Vendor support : It’s also important to check the costs of the authoring tool.

Product Review: Articulate Storyline

eLearning 24-7

Now if you want to download it for offline viewing on an iPad series device: To do so, you (whomever that may be) allow your learners to download the course. For me, I selected “HTML5″, “Use Articulate Mobile for viewing on the iPad”, allow downloading for offline viewing. For my instructional designers and e-learning developers, they loved creating courses. However, I found for the masses, including myself, it was a tedious but necessary part of the job.

E-Learning News and Notes

eLearning 24-7

While it is true that there are vendors who are pure online proctoring solutions, it would seem to me, that having it as part of a learning management or platform is a better route then just a self-contained OP solution. In the end, no matter what type of security you setup, if someone really wants to cheat even with a 360 web cam that the vendor provides, it can be done. Working on the course - one is online then goes offline and the other author goes online.
