The evolution of personal learning environments

Origin Learning

A personal learning environment refers to the tools, technologies, resources etc. that a person uses at the individual level to build on his knowledge base. By and large, this constitutes John’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

I Believe in the Importance of a Personal Learning Network

Tom Spiglanin

When I started using Twitter for my professional growth and development, I didn’t realize that I was also starting to build my personal learning network. I simply found myself tweeting at a learning and development conference using its hashtag and others began connecting with me.

My Personal Learning Network

I was asked by Grainne Conole to record a short video on my views about Personal Learning Networks, VLEs vs PLEs and other related topics, as a contribution toward her unkeynote with Ricardo Torres Kompen for the PLE conference in Aviero, Portugal this week.

Why and how to create successful Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) in the Workplace

TalentLMS

By leveraging your personal learning network to get the information you need, you can become instantly productive. What is a Personal Learning Network (PLN)? It then extends beyond the “personal” circle of contacts that was established initially. In-person PLNs.

Models For Designing Your Personal Learning Environment

The eLearning Coach

A personal learning environment (PLE) is a solution for keeping up with the rapid pace of knowledge change. Some say it is a concept, while others say it is a technology.

PLE bargaining

Those attending the PLE Conference found themselves quickly immersed in discussion, dialogue and debate over the nature and ethos of the personal learning environment. Assessment and accreditation of learning were discussed, as was the curriculum.

Personal Learning Environments and personal learning environments

Tony Karrer

There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments. Getting back, I've seen quite a few blog posts on the topic: Stephen Downes - Personal Learning I can talk about webs and networks and personal learnings and PLEs but there's a disconnect unless people see themselves as learners rather than teachers. I believe that we all have a personal learning environment.

Personal Learning Tools and Technologies

Tony Karrer

I just saw a post by George Siemens discussing evolution of PLE concept and pointed me to two posts by Chris Lott based on his initial question - "What does your PLE look like?" - Tired of PLE Flak and I'm not interested in the PLE which then pointed me to a bunch of other posts as well - on the PLE and An audit on where stand with PLEs. Jane Hart has done a great job collecting individual answers to what learning tools and technologies that people use.

Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

I've been reading a lot over the past few months around Personal Learning Environments and a lot of related material. world that included a post by Bill Ives - Managing Personal Knowledge: Setting a Foundation for Transformation? adoption is getting folks to manage their personal knowledge and adopt practices like blogging for personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal learning. Certainly PLE and PKM would seem to be too limited, right?

This time it's personal

Learning with e's

Personal. That means that when you learn, you do it differently to everyone else. It follows that the tools and technologies you use for learning are those you have selected to use because you are (or should be) comfortable with them, personally. Idiosyncratic. Individual.

More on Personal Learning Environments

Tony Karrer

Ray Sims has a great post on Personal Learning Environment and personal learning environments. His diagram and description that states that we not only each have our own personal learning environment, but that we are interconnected in all sorts of ways and need to be able to group things together for certain kinds of groups (organizational, informal, etc.) I agree with his overall goal, but I'm not sure I separate Learning and Doing.

PLE vs VLE

Learning with e's

Primary education students, Adam Skill, Danny Houton and James Carhart, have created a most excellent video to accompany their paper for the Plymouth e-Learning Conference next month. Each PLE by its nature is unique, with each individual choosing their own preferred approaches.

#LearningIs personal

Learning with e's

We all learn differently. Everyone of us has individual needs and personal requirements. Unfortunately, most of us are products of education systems that are based on the industrial model of education which is far removed from personalised learning. Each of us has preferences.

In addition to less than inspiring visuals, most LMSs don’t offer individualized learning paths. Instead they push users through a rigid, one-size-fits-all course structure -- hardly an optimal experience in the age of hyper personalization.

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 Personal Learning Earthquake Sometimes tectonic plates shift and earthquakes form cracks in the crust. My personal view of e-Learning is from the corporate side of the aisle. So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? The care of a whole person.

PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

Tony Karrer

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. A PLE that is 'inside the enterprise' is a contradiction in terms.

Personal Learning - Corporate Environment

Learning Rocks

So far at work I've managed to avoid mentioning the TLA "PLE", mostly to avoid the blank stares and potential ostracism. For me, the most important technological component in all this is RSS, really simple syndication, the bit that makes the blogs work and what feeds my Google homepage - the start of my own PLE. I'd love to know so I could help these guys get the solution that suits them best, and examples of people like them getting the learning right would really help.

But reading The Bamboo Project blog reminded of how our digital lives are spread all over, and the idea of a PLE is quite compelling. Michele's post My Personal Learning Environment is GREAT! If you are new to the whole idea of PLEs then you should check out a PLE in action. I know Stephen mentioned that a PLE doesn't actually exist yet, and I would only agree in that a single PLE tool does not exist yet.
