Many organizations wrap their LMS in a very user friendly portal so the actual LMS may be transparent to the user. The portal may be part of an organization-wide effort to provide access to all HR services and company information through one home page. Used in this way, portal technology increases the efficiency of the LMS.

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. Why would I want to have an API in my LMS/LCMS or CMS? Again, either incorporate into your LMS/LCMS/CMS or your learning portal. Social Learning?

The new article on a side note: focuses on emerging technology, but with a twist – something vendors in any e-learning space should be doing or exploring, but have not yet. I want to make something very clear – Moodle and other open source LMSs, Learning Portals, CMSs, etc. are NOT out of the box solutions.

Is it me or does it seem that most vendors in the LMS/LCMS market still believe that with some smoke and mirrors, you won’t realize that social media actually must be integrated into social learning for it to exist? Or do they just drop the word, “social media&# , and rather say, “social learning and web 2.0″?
