I was presented with an interesting task recently: I was asked to recommend a learning management system (LMS) that can support 6 different languages (English, French, French-Canadian, Italian, German, and Spanish). This is new territory to me; I have only worked with LMSs and eLearning courses in English.

Over 25 languages supported – I know some fee based systems that support not even ten. AICC/SCORM/IMS. SumTotal Learning Maestro. This is the former GeoLearning Maestro solution, which is now listed as SumTotal Learning Maestro. SCORM 2004/1.2 Works with all browsers and OSs – inc. itslearning.

SCORM/AICC/PENS/IMS. Q: Saba, SumTotal, Cornerstone, Taleo, SuccessFactors must be the best because a lot of people buy these systems. Those that don’t are due to: Your tool works only with SCORM 2004 3rd edition, and your LMS only accepts AICC. I’d rather know if LMS vendor has had issues with support, updates, etc.

Some items stood out, others continued in an everlasting awful experience (customer and support service – as a whole). Thus, your competition expands: Large size vendors such as Saba, Cornerstone On Demand, SumTotal, Taleo, SuccessFactors – recently acquired by SAP. HTML5 support – sorry Flash fans .

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. For me, it is all about ease of use and eliminating calls to tech support for help. The Forecasts. I’m a big fan of them and I use the product. The quality of the content varies.

For the past several years during selection I've found that they trail Saba and SumTotal on needed capabilities and they were hard to use for particular tasks that were important to the clients involved. If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down. SumTotal by Skillsoft. SumTotal ruined IMO the GeoLearning LMS known as Maestro and will Skillsoft buying SumTotal, I wondered to myself whether this would be great or awful.

The system lacks the ability to import skill dictionaries and job definitions and link definitions to competencies, doesn’t support a couple of languages including Russian and Dutch, and is missing mobile apps (i.e Support is above average. The system thankfully does not support “assignments” and I am so glad.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. Also get to know how their support team is. You will need help and how well they support their customers (or even during your trial) is a good bench mark. Paul Schneider in my opinion is one of the guru’s in the authoring tool industry.
