But does using PowerPoint as the base for our learning pigeon-hole us into thinking about learning from a PowerPoint perspective? You know what I mean: Linear. Bullet points. Display mode. It just seems… lacking. This industry seems poised for some major disruption.

Black and white charts with various Clipart images aren’t going to do any favors with regards to attention span. This can easily become overwhelming for the learner. Speaking of which, if you do decide to use charts and graphs (or images), make sure to keep them interesting.

In the infancy of this industry it was not uncommon to sit through elearning modules that consisted entirely of Microsoft PowerPoint slides and perhaps some Clipart sprinkled throughout. Today’s elearning courses look nothing like they used to back when elearning first started to grow in popularity. That was it.

Seeing a course with Clipart from 1998 is distracting more than anything. The use of charts and images to convey information is much appreciated. I also enjoy when a course uses contemporary styling for the graphics as well. Is no more than an hour and a half in duration. I have a pretty good attention span, but I’m not superman.

If you were lucky there would be some Clipart included as well. Well, gone are those days (and same with Clipart , if you didn’t know). In the past it wasn’t uncommon for an elearning module to simply have some generic text in a PowerPoint-type format. A well put together online course is both motivates and informs.

Everything from the way the courses are presented to the images used within them (remember ClipArt?). Elearning has evolved quite a bit in the past 10 years. What constitutes quality elearning design and delivery is as cyclical as the fashion industry. Trends go beyond the visuals and can also determine how the content is delivered.
