For the past 15 years, I've spent a lot of time working on start-ups both inside and outside the world of eLearning. As I mentioned in Blogger Outreach , I'm now getting quite a few emails that are announcements of new services, products, events, etc.... For example, create a business simulation that integrates with those products. Or a learning tool that leverages those products to help aggregate activity.

This is the method I have used inTANKTICS, EASTERN FRONT 1941, and LEGIONNAIRE, with varying degrees ofsuccess. This strategy demands great effort from the game designer, forsuch ad-hoc routines must be reasonable yet unpredictable. Our first requirement of any artificial smarts system is thatit produce reasonable behavior.... Examples ofsymmetric games include COMBAT for the ATARI 2600, BASKETBALL, and DOGDAZE by Gray Chang. Symmetric games suffer from a variety of weaknesses, thegreatest of which is their relative simplicity.

One of the more interesting aspects of this is that I've really changed and refined what I advise both audiences in terms of their learning 2.0 strategy. But, here's what I see in terms of a CLO perspective. Seven Key Aspects of Learning 2.0 Strategy 1. Start Tactical and Bottom Up The title of the post is horribly misleading. When I used to work with organizations on defining an eLearning Strategy, I always worked from a very broad view of needs across the organization and the implications that had on people, process and technology.

While I’ve lots more to say, I put a short version of my vision of elearning strategy in Michael Allen’s 2009 e-Learning Annual . It’s about both getting the individual elements right, and establishing the connections between the elements to achieve synergy, not irrelevance (or worse).

We discovered ‘The Ten Commandments of eLearning” as elucidated by Cath Ellis and Clive Shepherd . We’ve decided to follow in the same vein and list our commandments.... Use technology, leverage it, but always remember it’s a means to an end. The desired end is learning and resultant performance and not the use of cool technology. However, knowing what technology to leverage for effective learning is essential too. Remember, technology can’t replace learning, only augment and support it.

Usability testing is a critical process that too often gets skipped due to lack of time and/or resources. I decided to gather some of my favorite resources related to usability and present them here. I hope they save you some time, effort, and money. (And please chime in if you have recommendations!)
But first… Why is usability important in eLearning?
