If you have been in the elearning (or training) industry for any amount of time, then you are most likely aware of the Kirkpatrick model of learning evaluation. For many of us in this industry, it is the go-to methodology for gathering training related metrics and reporting on training success.

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

In November 1959, Donald Kirkpatrick published a series of seminal articles on training evaluation in the ‘Journal of the ASTD’. They go on to add it’s important to distinguish a plan to build effective training & the evaluation methodology from the actual collection of data. I'm working on an article around the use of ROI and metrics in eLearning. Kirkpatrick's Level 3: Improving the Evaluation of E-Learning Level 3 evaluations measure whether the there was an actual transfer of learning to the actual work setting. I did a quick search for resources and here's what I found.
