It wouldn’t be hard for WebEx, Adobe, Centra, Elluminate Blackboard, or their peers to provide a default conferencing environment that mirrors best practices for interactive meetings instead of mimicking what went on in yesteryear’s boring one-way workshops and classrooms. Elluminate did not work through several firewalls, so we had to switch to WebEx. Do not believe any vendor claim that "it works through firewalls" because a firewall can be configured to stop anything it wants. For example, in our course, we found that Yahoo Groups were restricted in some corporate environments. That's its job.

One thing your comment really got me thinking more about is, in general, vendors’ lack of features to support informal and/or social interaction. During the Elluminate sessions, we often had heady academic discourses by those running the session, sometimes allowing little time for feedback. It had upwards of 2,000 people register.

To me Real Time Collaboration (RTC) solutions like Macromedia Breeze , Centra , WebEx , Elluminate etc replicate oh so many of the problems we face in the traditional face-to-face model. Until RTC vendors get this, that they are part of something bigger, then real time events will continue to leave the viewer turned off (pun intended).
