I’ve seen several posts related to the SWF output and the lack of browser support or simply having issues playing them. I also have a number of projects that were published as SWF from old versions of Captivate. In many cases, all I have any longer is the final SWF. The post What about all those old SWF files?

This format file was developed by Microsoft for the Windows Media Player. YouTube supports WMV , and Apple users can view these videos, but they must download Windows Media Player for Apple. FLV, F4V, and SWF are flash video formats designed for Flash Player, but they’re commonly used to stream video on YouTube.

I suppose all developers are aware that the final death of Flash Player, SWF output will be there sooner than expected. For the ‘blank’ projectstThe big button Preview has changed the sequence of the methods and clarified that the former ‘Preview in Browser (F12)’ is creating a temporary SWF.

Popular web browsers have already discussed their plans to no longer support the Flash plugin. Take inventory of your courses, especially those requiring a Flash Player to view. If any of the files have the extension.flv or.swf, it relies on the Flash player. What does this mean for you and your courses? Course format (.swf,htm).

Sorry for my cynical attitude, had many discussions with authors over that type of articles. My first idea was to post this as a discussion, but in the past discussions didn’t have any success at all. It can be used as standalone asset; the viewer only needs a mp4 player which is available on each system.

In fact, the frog dissection post I did a few months ago came as a result of a conference discussion. If you use Articulate Presenter, hide slides 2-4 and set the branching on the player controls to go back to slide 1 and forward to slide 5 (if you had one). I use the free application SWF Player to easily preview the.swf files.

The legacy, software-based standard that Flash Player used drained battery significantly faster. Though widely discussed as ‘end of support’, the reality is that the cut-off date for Flash will be more of a killing blow. Flash Player must be first enabled in the browser settings since version 76 (July 2019). 264 video decoding.
