I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools.

Consider the internet; developments on top of the TCP/IP protocol like SMTP and HTML allowed a variety of tools to work together to bring us email and the world wide web. After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. SCORM works for courses.

I’ve met people who had worked on the original SCORM standard, those driving the new xAPI standard, as well as early champions of our industry who coined the terms and built the original software tools. Through the 70s it was being marketed as a tool for retraining unemployed workers in new fields.

It’s not about being famous either, I rejected some NY Times Best Selling Authors, because I wasn’t airing an episode of insomnia cures. I like the inclusion of a built-in authoring tool here, and while quick turnkey (aka as self-service) may skimp on some capabilities, they do meet other criteria. Mobile too.

Where portals to other dimensions open up at the moment the learner can’t access the system, when a manager from accounting complains in a two page e-mail, that she can’t access the mobile app, or when a customer demands a refund because the content you uploaded doesn’t run on their Windows 2000 machine. Very close indeed.I

Authoring Tools. In 2012 it has been all about collaborative/peer review with authoring products, and it still will be in 2013, but the avatars/actors with/without backgrounds are going to be in “fuego” Where can it go? In 2012, I’ve seen a slow uptake with tools that can output to HTML5. Wait and See.
