Best of the Best: Content Authoring Tools

eLearning 24-7

Again, not every tool below is SaaS based, but at some point, you have to move to the SaaS world, especially if you are offering or saying you do – some type of mobile learning functionality. I’ve seen some authoring tools that fit most of the criteria above, but whose ease of use is substandard or even really bad. There is never any pay for play here – even my vendor clients are aware that they may not win best of the best.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. Built in assessment tool, inc.

Product Review: EasyGenerator Rapid Content Authoring Tool

EasyGenerator is a SaaS based content authoring tool that is like a piece of fine sculpture, with some cracks, but beauty that is hidden within. Extremely feature rich – can compete with Captivate and other authoring tools. File, Edit, View, Tools and Help.

LCMS - Warehouse and Authoring

Tony Karrer

One thing is pretty clear, LCMS tools have really headed towards a kind of super Authoring tool and there's a related but quite distinct need for support for a Warehouse. The need for the Warehouse - keeping track of learning content assets across the organization has its own set of requirements. External vendors can work with the LCMS as well. This most often devolves into the LCMS being used to manage assets that will be packaged (authored) for distribution.

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

Because if you are using a content authoring tool that is SCORM 2004, then you must find a system that is at least 2004. Your tool will not work with a 1.2. Unless you purchased a tool that is only AICC compliant, which in that case, time to ditch it and get another one. If you plan to track or have instructor led training, then this is relevant. Can you track the end users in it? If you choose to use it, tracking is important.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

In 2011, I saw quite a few items that resonated. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. Allscripts merged hospital software with an accurate gesture -based system. Online Authoring Systems.

Right now, at m-learning vendor locations around the world, especially in the RCAT space, they should be scheduling meetings and coming up with a new perspective and approach to their products. For LMS vendors, adding “HTML5 feature sets makes sense – especially if they are adding mobile learning components in their system. For vendors whose products are in the works for HTML5 output (ahem, in beta), perhaps speeding up the process wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

Award Nominee Reveals His eLearning Authoring Toolkit [Guest Post]

Several years ago we engaged a vendor to create three eLearning modules for a new product launch. When I went back to the product marketing team with the request for budget to re-engage the vendor, they were less than enthusiastic. So I offered to create the updates myself, if they would pay for authoring software. I’ve expanded to using Toolbook and other software. First, be aware that many LMS systems already have integrated authoring software.

Questions on whether there are any good systems for under 50K (yes, plenty), what systems offer batch uploading and curriculum paths (nearly all of them), do I need a content authoring tool built in (no), it is better to have a SaaS system or on my own servers (SaaS), and many more. Yes, but it is a challenge, because there is only a handful of vendors, who will actually sell you outright their system. A RFP is a time waster – for you and the vendors.

Enterprise mLearning Predictions for 2012

mLearning Trends

I agree the technologies to create, deploy and manage HTML5-based mobile web apps will greatly improve in 2012 but I don't feel they will mature to the point they can replace all native apps – at least in most of the primary enterprise use cases for learning that’s managed and tracked. I suspect the annual Consumer Electronics Show (“CES”) event in Las Vegas next week will have far fewer tech OEMs wading into the tablet pool as compared with January 2011.

Current state of Gamification in the LMS Market

eLearning 24-7

40 vendors had at least three gamification features (8 of them had at least four features). Several vendors offered the ability for admin (clients) to upload their own badge. You do not need a built-in authoring tool to do this. Blue Volt was doing this back in the late 2000’s and still do it – tied to a gift card reward program; other vendors are jumping on as well (with more in 2015, but really really tiny numbers).
